Hi, I am Melissa from Northline Express. I am here with some great information on, even though it may be later in the season, how you can still reclaim your back yard from those pesky biting mosquitoes. The best way to do this is to start at the source. Mosquitoes Breed in water so it is important that you are actually taking care of the problem by removing or treating any source of standing water on your property with larvacides rather than just swatting them away or covering yourself in mosquito spray.

It is a very simple process, the first step is to evaluate your property keeping an eye out for any areas where water is allowed to collect and lay stagnate on your property. They are prime breeding sources for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes inhabit areas like old tires, empty flower pots, rain gutters, swamps, ponds, in puddles on tarps, in pet’s food and water dishes, wading pools and hot tubs, bird baths, and rain barrels.

According to Jim Mills, president of Universal Solutions, “mosquitoes can breed in as little as two tablespoons of water,” and it only takes mosquito larvae 4-7 days to mature into adult biting insects. These shocking stats are why gaining mosquito control over breeding grounds is so important. It’s much easier to kill hundreds of mosquito larvae at one time that it is to kill large numbers of mosquitoes as adults.

The following larvacide products have been tested and proven effective at wiping out mosquito breeding grounds.

Mosquito Barrier is made from 100% super concentrated garlic juice and is very toxic to mosquitoes due to their soft bodies, yet totally safe to humans and the environment! When mixed with canola oil, it can be effective as a larvacide treatment. The Barrier suffocates any mosquito larvae in standing water, such as puddles, depressions in your lawn, etc.

Mosquito Bits are another larvacide option. Add these easy, ready to use “bits” to water gardens, flower pots, rain barrels, bird baths, tree holes, unused swimming pools, old automobile tires, etc. to destroy your mosquito population. Within 24 hours mosquito larvae are dead and you can get back outdoors and begin to enjoy the summer. The Mosquito Bits release B.T.I a bacteria that causes a disease specific to mosquito larvae. The larvae then die after consuming the bacteria. Bits are harmless to all other forms of wildlife.

Mosquito Dunks are a once a month float briquette that you will throw in the Water Garden or anywhere water accumulates around your home. Each Briquette will effectively treat up to 100 square feet of surface water regardless of depth. Briquettes may be broken to treat small areas. Dunks release a constant, low dose of B.T.I., a bacterium that controls mosquitoes and black flies in their larval filter feeding stage of development. Continuous ingestion of the active ingredient produces a chronic infection which kills the larvae so the pupae and adult mosquitoes will not emerge.

To get the best grip on your mosquito problem or to prevent one altogether it is going to be vital that you are eliminating and treating mosquito breeding grounds around you home with a lavracide. Keep watching our reclaim your backyard series; next I am going to teach you how you can use mosquito traps to reclaim your back yard.
