If you are just starting to develop a mosquito problem or just getting around to dealing with the mosquitoes then listen up. I am Melissa from Northline Express and I am here to talk to you about how you can use mosquito traps to reclaim your backyard. The general idea of a mosquito trap is to reduce the number of mosquitoes in your outdoor areas. They do this by capturing the females, the biters and egg layers. There are a variety of different types and styles of mosquito traps available but all are going to use some sort of attractant to get to get the mosquito’s attention.

You can even choose between traps that are powered by electricity or propane. Each mosquito trap does require some sort of maintenance. Traps may be overall the most effective mosquito solution but they are not a set it and forget it item. You will need to monitor the catch level, empty the catch nets, and change lures at the least. A mosquito trap is going to be one of the most involved approaches to your mosquito problem.

Mosquito traps take advantage of mosquitoes’ sensory abilities by tricking them with features that mimic the smells and visual stimuli associated with people. Various brands produce CO2, octenol, heat, light, or a combination of those to lure mosquitoes in, and then trap them in containers where they die.

To be the most effective, the traps need to be placed correctly, which means in a shaded area located between the source of the mosquitoes and where people gather in your yard. The best idea is to try it in different places until you find the right one. You’ll also want to experiment with a variety of attractants to see which ones appeal most to your local mosquitoes. Traps will produce immediate results but it usually takes about 4-6 weeks to notice the full effects of the interrupted breeding cycle.

I’m going to talk about a few different mosquito traps today that I have personally tried and do recommend.

First I am going to talk about SkeeterVac Mosquito Traps. There are two models currently available, the SV3100 & the SV5100. The SV3100 provides up to a half acre of coverage while the SV5100 provides a full acre of coverage. Both units run on propane, they use the propane to create the heat and Co2 output that mimics what a human produces. They also use an attractant, octenol that is include with the unit. In addition to the fan the units have a sticky trap on the outside of the unit that catches mosquitoes as well.

The next brand of mosquito traps that we offer is Mosquito Magnet. There are three different models of the mosquito magnet the Patriot, the Independence, and the Executive. These units run on propane as well and provide from a half acre to a full acre of coverage depending on the unit. The mosquito magnets use an attractant in addition to the propane to attract the mosquitoes and they can be used with Octenol or Lurex attractants.

The Mega Catch family of mosquito traps has been used by thousands of US households since 2002, and have proven themselves a top contender in mosquito control technologies. The patented CO2 gas attractant system available on the Ultra and Premier models boasts up to 400% increase in capture rate. Multiple attractants are used to draw mosquitoes into the Mega-Catch mosquito trap to attract a broad range of mosquito species.

DynaTrap Insect Traps offer immediate relief against mosquito infestations using a 3-way protection plan that effectively attracts, traps, and kills mosquitoes and other biting insects in both indoor and outdoor settings. These traps effectively reduce and eliminate flying, biting insects indoors and outdoors without chemicals. They are economical and easy to install. They plug into any standard outlet and begin working immediately to diminish the pain and discomfort of mosquito infestations. UV florescent bulbs will effectively attract mosquitoes both in bright and dark indoor and outdoor settings and it is designed to be operated 24/7 for around the clock protection.

Due to the fact that mosquito traps do take time to produce the full effects, I do recommend using them in conjunction with another mosquito repellent. At least until you have given the trap time to really start working. Keep watching our reclaim your back yard series, in our next video I am going to be covering mosquito repellents.
