How To Measure Your Wood Burning Fireplace For A Fireplace Grate
In this short video Joe will walk you through the steps of measuring your fireplace for a fireplace grate.
Items You’ll Need:
Paper
Pencil or Pen
Tape Measure
Start by measuring the width of your fireplace. Note that for tapered fireplaces like in our example you’ll need to measure the front and rear width of your fireplace.
Next, measure the depth of your fireplace from front to back.
To provide the proper amount of circulation around your fire you need to have 3″ of space between your fireplace grate and the walls of your fireplace. This not only helps provide a better burn but it also helps to keep some distance between the fire and your fireplace walls which prevents damage to your fireplace due to overheating.
To achieve this 3″ space subtract 6″ from both the width and depth of your fireplace measurements.
In our example our fireplace measured:
- Front Width = 41″
- Rear Width = 25″
- Depth = 22 3/4″ (rounded down to 22″)
I rounded the depth down to 22″ to make the math easier. You can always round down, but do not round up. After we subtract 6″ we end up with…
- Front Width = 35″
- Rear Width = 19″
- Depth = 16″
NOTE: The most common mistake when ordering a fireplace grate is to only look at the front width and ignore the rear width in a tapered fireplace. This typically ends up in a costly return after paying shipping. Be sure to confirm that all measurements before ordering.
Keep in mind that fireplace grates are categorized by their front width, you may need to look at several sizes before you find one that will fit your fireplace.
