In this article I’m going to give you several tips that will help you effectively kill mosquitoes in your yard as well as your neighborhood.

Home and Neighborhood Recon

There are many areas around your home and neighborhood that are ideal breeding and resting environments for mosquitoes and before you are ready to rid your property of mosquitoes, first you have to understand where they are coming from and which products effectively kill them.

The first thing you should do is seek out and eliminate standing water sources around your home. These water sources provide breeding areas for mosquitoes and are more often than not the heart of the problem.

Female mosquitoes need water to lay their eggs and mosquito larvae need water to complete their life cycle and it doesn’t take much. Mosquitoes can lay eggs and mosquito larvae can thrive in just a tablespoon of water.

What You Need To Look For:

  • Clean out your rain gutters, dispose of cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots or similar water-holding containers, dispose of old tires and buckets etc.
  • Identify low lying areas in yards and fields what hold water after heavy rains.  Check drainage ditches and make sure they are clear and flowing properly.  If you find areas that frequently get backed up and cannot be cured use a mosquito larvacide like mosquito dunks or mosquito bits to treat them.
  • Ponds, bird baths, pools or any other water sources that cannot be emptied should also be treated with mosquito dunks or bits.

Trap and Kill Mosquitoes

Once you’ve located and eliminated water sources around your home and neighborhood, the next step is to draw mosquitoes away from your outdoor living area with mosquito traps.

The most effective mosquito traps use CO2 combined with octenol or lurex attractant to trick the mosquitoes senses into thinking they are pursuing a living, breathing host. The trap draws mosquitoes in using a powerful fan and they collect in a container where they dehydrate and die.

Mosquito traps offer immediate and long term relief from mosquito infestations. They start killing adult female biting mosquitoes immediately and they interrupt the breeding cycle after just 4 weeks of constant operation.

These traps can be placed near mosquito breeding grounds to help kill mosquitoes before they venture out for a meal.  Shady areas that hold damp leaves, long grass, etc are particularly good areas for placement of mosquito traps.

Mosquito Misters and foggers can also be used to repel mosquitoes by creating an invisible barrier between you and mosquitoes, using a variety of concentrated mist solutions that are released at timed intervals.

Using a larvacide like mosquito barrier to spray grass, trees, fences, house sidings, bushes and any other shrubs or foliage will repel mosquitoes away from your property and kill the ones that make it through your mosquito trap defenses.

Educate Your Neighbors

The best thing you can do to help fight the war against mosquitoes is to spread the word in your neighborhood and help your neighbors get educated.  Awareness throughout a neighborhood can drastically reduce the number of mosquitoes in your area.

Consider attending your neighborhood council meetings and bringing up mosquito control. Point neighbors to online resources.  Hold a neighborhood meeting.  Get creative and have fun with it.
