The Pellet Fire Pit From Assembly to Enjoying a Beautiful Fire
Hi. I’m Melissa from Northline Express, and I’m here to introduce you to the latest and greatest when it comes to outdoor fire pits. This right here in this box is actually a pellet fire pit. And what that means is instead of using wood or gas, you’re going to use wood pellets like you would use for a pellet stove or insert to actually fuel your fire. There are a couple of benefits to this. Just like in a house, pellets are going to create more heat and will also produce less ash. One thing I’m sure that all of you are going to love, is that there will be less smoke to chase you around and around that fire pit.
So what I want to do today is open up the box and show you what you are going to get. It does require a little assembly, but it’s very easy to assemble. In fact, you’re only going to need a flat or Phillips head screwdriver. So let’s get started and show you how nicely it’s packaged and how easy it is to put together.
I pre-cut my tape for easy access here. There is a little bit of foam packaging to keep it safe while it’s in transit. So the first piece you’re going to pull out is going to be the base of the fire pit, the actual fire pit itself. Set that aside. Keep digging. Then you will find the legs, they are wrapped individually so they don’t scratch each other up. Set those aside as well. The hardware that we’re going to need to assemble the legs is packaged all together in a convenient bag. There is one more piece and that’s going to be the ash pan which is going to sit underneath of the fire pit and catch the small amount of ash that is produced.
Now let’s get started. I want to show you how easy this is to assemble. I got rid of my box and I’ve got all of the pieces laid out here. And as you can see, there is not a whole lot to actually do. That’s why I said it’s quite simple to assemble. So the first thing you’re going to have to do is to attach the three legs to the fire pit body. I am going to flip the fire pit base upside down. I have the only tool that I’m going to need and that’s flat head screw driver. The hardware would accept either a Phillips or a flat head. I just happen to have a flat head screwdriver handy. You will see there are three tabs on the bottom of the fire pit that are welded in place and they have pre-drilled holes for the hardware. I kept my hardware in the bag just so I would not lose any of it. There is going to be two nuts and bolts per leg. You will want to set them in place and tighten them loosely with your fingers. I have kept the head on the outside just so that it has a more finished look. Then go back through and tighten everything up with my screw driver. The legs are now tightened down and there is one step left. That is to flip it over and set it in place on the ash pan. So that is all there is to getting it out of the box and ready to go. It will only take a few minutes of your time. It is now time to grab our pellets and I’ll walk you through setting up your pellet fire pit. I will show you how easy it is to use and wonderful it is to enjoy.
There is one thing I want you to look at before we fill the basin. If you look inside the the basin you will notice that there is mesh screened bottom and there are diamonds around the inside around the upper part and also on the outside of the bottom of the basin. The reason for the mesh bottom is that it is going to allow air flow through and also allow any ash that is produced to fall to the pan below. The diamonds on the sides are going to pull the air through. That air is going to get heated and then come out through the diamonds on the inside to make sure that the fire is getting adequate airflow. Wait until you see the beautiful flame that is produced by this pellet fire pit, it is absolutely wonderful.
Okay, so now that we have our pellet fire pit all set up, the only thing we have left to do is to add the fuel and we will be ready to light it. The fuel you will be using is wood pellets. It is recommended that you use a hardwood pellet fuel, just like what would be used for any pellet wood stove or pellet insert. If you’re not familiar with wood pellets, you should be able to purchase a bag of wood pellets at your local hardware store. This particular bag I picked up at our local Tractor Supply Store. I’ve got just a generic little scoop here. You are going to want to fill the basin with 2-3 inches of pellets. You want to make sure that your pellets are dry because if there is moisture present it could cause issues with the fire pit. Just like it would cause problems in a pellet stove or a pellet insert. Some of the issues that may arise are that it will not burn as well and you have a smoke issue. The best feature about this pellet fire pit is you don’t deal with the smoke like you do in a regular outdoor campfire so definitely keep your pellets dry.
I’m going to continue to fill up the basin and then we’re going to get it lit. You will see that that pan is nice because it’s going to catch any of the loose debris from the pellets while I’m putting them in. We’ll get rid of those before we get it lit. All right, that should do it. Now I’ve got my pellets in my pellet fire pit and it is time to light it. What I have here is a safe light fire starter, you may use any fire starter that you prefer. I just happen to have Safe Lights in the house because I have a wood stove. So you might as well use what’s handy.
I am going to get my safe light fire starter lit. Once it’s lit, you are just going to set it down in there. The fire will not immediately take off like a gas fire pit would or even like a wood fire would on a nice perfect day. The fire is not going to fully ignite until the air in between the chambers is heated up. It’s usually about five to six minutes before the flame of your pellet fire pit is burning to its full potential. I am going to let this sit here and wait, and then I’ll come back and show off the beautiful flame from the pellet fire pit.
About seven minutes have past my fire pit is ignited. I didn’t have to do anything other than sit and wait. It was actually pretty nice. I didn’t have to mess around building a teepee. I didn’t have to worry about my fire smoldering out. It’s just basically one fire starter and waiting, and it lit itself. It has a decent-sized flame comparable to any traditional wood or gas fire and it’s also putting off quite a bit of heat. It’s a nice day out anyway, but for demonstration purposes I am showing it off, and it’s doing a great job of putting out the heat. Because this is a pellet fire pit, it’s actually going to burn very hot and clean. So even though it is small, it’s still going to put out quite a bit of heat for those cool, chilly evenings or even during the winter months when it’s not desirable to be outside.
The other great thing about using a wood pellet fire pit is that it’s going to leave almost no ashes behind when it’s done burning and is going to have very little smoke. As you can see while we’ve been talking and it’s burning here, you’re not seeing a whole bunch of smoke put off. Especially if you think about a traditional campfire or outdoor fire where you see that smoke just chasing people around the fire pit and it leaves you yelling white rabbit, white rabbit, white rabbit all night long. Not with the wood pellet fire pit. There is also no need for use of a spark arrestor. That is because you’re not using traditional wood, like what you would use in a traditional fire pit. So you are not going to have those popping sparks and embers coming off it that can potentially cause fires to start on other areas of your property around the fire.
So as you can see, this fire pit, even though it’s small, is still going to pack a punch when it comes to the size of the flame as well as the amount of heat it’s going to put off. And with those wood pellets, it’s definitely putting out a lot of heat just like the wood pellets do when you use them inside.
This pellet fire pit has a diameter of 12 inches and has an overall height of 14 ½ inches. So it’s a nice size for small patios, like what I have, or for larger patios as well. My patio is only about 10 ft. by 10 ft. and it still allows me to have this fire pit centrally located in between my furniture, but it’s not taking up the entire space. The small size also allows it to be close enough that you can enjoy the fire and not be stuck way out in left field.
The small size also adds to its portability allowing you to take your campfire with you. Using the pellet fuel also helps with its portability due to the fact that they’re really starting to crack down on transporting fire wood because of diseases with trees. It’s convenient and it is small enough to keep in your camper, throw in your trunk, or the bed of your truck when you go on vacation or a day trip.
So if you’re looking for a fire pit that’s going to have all the benefits of a traditional gas or wood fire without all of the hassle, the mess, and the big size to go along with it the wood pellet fire pit is the fire pit for you.
