What are Pyrethrins?
Pyrethrins are natural insecticides produced by certain species of the chrysanthemum plant. They offer safe, effective protection from mosquito bites. Unlike DEET, which has been proven to cause health issues with prolonged use, they offer effective mosquito control that is safe for your family and pets without environmental harm. Originally, pyrethrins were made by grinding dried chrysanthemum into a powder. However, more recent methods consist of extracting the oils within the flowers with solvents.
Natural Pyrethrins are actually a contact poison that rapidly penetrates the nervous system of mosquitoes and other insects. Within a few minutes of the application, mosquitoes will become paralyzed and unable to fly. It’s often found that a natural pyrethrin alone is not enough to completely eliminate mosquitoes but it does serve as a good initial knock down of the mosquito problem. Pyrethrins are not stable in direct sunlight and additives are often used to create a more long lasting and effective mosquito control solution. We offer two options for mosquito repellent that use pyrethrins or a synthetic form of them in the repellents.
Products that use Pyrethrins:
The first is the All Clear mosquito misters. Available in a full sized mister or compact misting patio lantern, they repel and kill mosquitoes on contact using a variety of concentrated mists. AllClear Botanical and Synergized Concentrates both contain pyrethrins. The botanical version will protect against mosquito bites for up to 4 hours. The synergized concentrate contains piperonyl butoxide, it increases insect mortality and offers up to 6 hours of mosquito control.
You can also find pyrethrins in ThermaCell Mosquito repellent appliances. ThermaCell units however use a chemical copy of the naturally occurring insecticide called allethrin. They use a metal grill to heat a mat that is saturated with allethrin. Once the repellent pad is heated, it is released from the appliance to create a mosquito-free barrier. These units provide up to 4 hours of protection per pad.
