I guess the smell of certain bug sprays isn’t that bad but they usually leave you sticky feeling and I hate to think about all the chemicals that I’m applying when I put it on. So I decided that I was going to find a way to enjoy camping without buy spray and I found three products that work great for repelling mosquitoes and require no application to your body.

I will start with my favorite product, Mosquito Barrier, which is an all-natural garlic concentrate that you can apply to your campsite. The Sulfur smell that the garlic gives off is undetectable by humans within minutes but is repulsive to mosquitoes that can smell about 10,000 times better than us. When you apply it, it will also kill soft bodied mosquitoes on contact. When I pack for a camping trip I always mix up a batch in my pressure sprayer and apply it to my campsite before I set up camp, especially if I plan on camping in a wooded area.

The mosquito barrier will protect you while you’re hanging around your campsite but when you take a hike or leave your campsite you still do not have to reach for the bug spray. If you are on the go use a ThermaCell Mosquito Repellent appliance to keep the bugs away. I love my ThermaCell for camping and it provides a coverage area of 225sq ft. which is usually big enough to cover most campsites. If you’re going on a hike or going to be on the go pair the hand held unit with the holster and you have hands free mosquito protection. The units operate on butane which heats the repellent pads. Each butane cartridge lasts up to 12 hours and repellent pads provide up to 4 hours of protection. The units can be turned on and off as well so you can use them only when you need them. ThermaCell also makes a lantern version which is great for camping because they provide mosquito protection and light. Both the handheld and the lantern version are light weight and do not give off any scent.

Another great hands-free mosquito repellent is the AllClear SideKick Mosquito Repeller. This unit clips on with a built in clip and uses fan power to repel mosquitoes with all-natural ingredients like sandalwood, lemongrass, and geranium oil. Each refill for the sidekick lasts up to 18 hours and the unit can be turned on and off so it can be used only when you need it. That the sidekick provides is the same as the ThermaCell units but I picked this one as my third choice only because of the scent that the unit gives off, it’s not an unpleasant I just do not prefer to smell like mosquito repellent. The Sidekick is compact and lightweight and I did find that it worked well when attached to my dogs harness on walks.

So when packing for your next camping trip, remember you can enjoy a mosquito free time without bug sprays and lotions. Try out one of these tested and proven solutions instead. Mosquito Barrier, ThermaCell, and the AllClear Sidekick are all great products from NorthlineExpress, home of the “Buy and Try” Satisfaction Guarantee.
